In tho dark lie encounters Loudon, fights and floors him, then returns to Vera. The latter hastens to the lodge, but finds Loudon, dead, and is in mortal fear that Cavendish has killed him. A detective finds at the lodge a bloody dagger, Cavendish's gloves, Vera’s handkerchief, and a broken cuff link marked “ C.” The mechanic identifies Vera and Cavendish ns having visited the lodge. Vera begs for twelve hours to prove who killed her husband, summons Carteret to meet her at tbe lodge, and by clever detective work forces him to admit having followed Loudon and Alicia and having killed London.
