Mr and Mrs A. L, Temple (Toko-, mam) are staying at tho Clarendon. Mr and Mrs 0. G. Wilson (Titnaru) are staying at the United Service. Miss I). Kenderdinc, who has been paying visits in Canterbury, will leave lor tho north this evening. Mr 13. M. Gillespie and Miss Gillespie (Oxford) have been in Christchurch on a brief visit. Miss Gertrude Johnson, accompanied by her mother, ia staying at the Clarendon. Mr and Mrs James Roberts (Dunedin) arrived in Christchurch yesterday, and arc staying at Warner’s. The Rev Townsend Hanby and Mrs Hanby (Leeston) are in town on their way to Auckland. Mrs W. Macfai'lane and Mrs Leslie Macd’arlane (Kaiwara, North Canterbury) aro in town, staying at Warner's. Miss Coleman and Miss E. Coleman, Riverside, Araherjoy, are having a, long holiday in the North Island, and are at present staying with relatives in tho Waikato district. Last evening the Misses Whitcombe, Murray Place, were hostesses a bridge evening given for Miss Gretia Wood. Tho prize went to Miss Amy Fish. Those present included Mrs H. Barton, Mrs D. Taylor. Miss Hannan (Greymouth), Miss M’Credio, Miss Haskins and Misses Diamond (12). Miss Isabel Scott, who is to he married on Wednesday, was entertained by the members of the croquet section of the Rangiora Bowling; Tennis and Croquet Club yesterday afternoon, and presented with n. solid silver vase, the presentation being made by Mrs Herbert Jones, president of the section. Amongst the guests this week at St Elmo are Hon and Mrs Michael, Mr and Mrs A. G. Bretherton, Mr am! Alia director (Wellington), Mr J. Farrell, Miss Roma, Miss Tuppy, Alisa Manning, Air and Airs Egbert. Mrs and Miss lister, Air and Airs Edgar, Mrs and Alisa Young (Invercargill), and Air and Airs R. Hill (Taihapo). Orr, D. Hawke arid E. Sknrr. The music was supplied hy Dr Bagley, Mrs Dailey, Alisaes Sknrr and Knowles. The ball given by the young ladies of Amberley took place on AVcdncsday night, and was a great succors. Tim hall was beautifully decorated in shades of pink and green, and tho large pink shaded lamps were most effective. Big mirrors wore placed hero and there to reflect the pretty coloured frocks of the .dancers. From the ceiling hung big baskets, filled with masses cf artificial pink roses and greenery. The stage,' which was arranged as a draw-ing-voom, was decorated with . palms and greenery. It is n 'matter of interest to know that Jlrs Bunics-Louglman is atranging a- concert in aid of the AVa.r Ale- i mornil Fund to bo given ip tho Theatre Itoyal on Sunday evening. The programme will be no ordinary one, tho artists including Atiss Eve ‘Lynn, tho principal girl of the pantomime company, who will sing several solos, Aliss Mu rgarpb Sutcliffe, an exponent of Shakespeare who has appeared with Ellen Terry; _Miss Paula iScherck, nhose delightful violin playing is so "ell known; Alins Alionc Stewart, who plays the piano; and Air J. H. Cocks, the Christchurch baritone. Besides these artists there will be others, and in the sweet name of charitv the audience should be richlv repaid by the excellence of the concert., thus assisting the growth of the war memorial and enjoying good music as well. The annual meeting of (ho AVomen’s Civic Group was held on Monday evening. A reply was received from the Mayor stating that when the War Memorial Week was over he would he prepared to take up the question of raising the "Fight the Famine bund.-' Gratification was expressed with Urn reply from the Minister of Education agreeing as to the importance of n. lunch room and accommodation for women teachers in the public schools, and stating that the increased sum for „ buildings would allow tho provision of such rooms. It was resolved to protest against the proposal of Dr Collins to wake notification of venereal disease corapulstory. The group again endorsed the opinion of the Social Hygiene Society to the effect that compulsory notification having proved a failure in all countries where tried, as a means of combating the liseasej free clinics and education are considered tho only effectual method of dealing with the scourge. The question of invalid pensions was discussed, and on the motion of Aliss AJackay! seconded by Airs Wilcox, it was dm cided to send a remit in advocacy thereof to the local branch of the National Council of Women.. A short' report of tho work of the year was| given. Aliss L. M. Smith was reelected president, and Airs E. AL Lovoll-Smith secretary (pro tern) and treasurer.
