Shamrock IV. is fitted with a new ut-rcamline sail between the mainsail and-the mast, giving the craft additional sail area. The weather forecast at Sandy Hook on- Thursday- was moderate to fresh •Winds, weather unsettled, with thunder showers probable. During tho day Shamrock IV. took a trial spin with the additional sail. Skipper Burton' stated that he Was very much satisfied with the vessel’s perfoamaheo. RESOLUTE WITHDRAWS. SHAMROCK IN THE LEAD. CONDITIONS OF THE CONTEST. 1 -i The conditions of the contest, briefly, are:— " (1) That tho races must be between ono yacht built in the country of the ?hallchging club, and one yacht built Jn the-country of the club holding thq, Cup. ,(2) That the size of the yachts, if of . one mast, must he , not loss than 65ft and not more than 90ft at the waterline; if of two-masted rig nob less than 80ft and not .more than 115 ft at tho waterline. (3) The challenging club must give ten months’ notice of the race, and accompanying the challenge must he lent the, name,- rig. and certain dimensions of tho challenging v-as'el. (4) The vossej must proceed under sail on her own bottom to the place where tho contest , is to take place. These conditions were embodied in a deed of gift signed in 1887 by Mr George L. S. Schuyler, the solo surviving owner of the Cup, which hail been giver, to the' New York' Yacht Club by the owner of the America. The deed of gift was an clastic document, ns it contained the following clause,winch is,knowu as the “ mutual agreement ” clause The club challenging for the Cup and tho club holding the samo may by mutual consent make any arrangement satisfactory to both as to tho dates, courses, number of trials, rules and «ailing regulations, and any and nil other conditions of tho match, in which case also the ten months’ notice (nay he waived.” The destination of the Cup is decided by tho host three out of five races.
