COUNCILLOR COOKE.

Mr F. R. Cooko has at last achieved ouo of his many ambitions, and has become Councillor Cooke. Ho has knocked at the door on many occasions, but the electorate was not disposed to be sympathetic. The Sydenham Ward, however, has always had a warm corner in its heart for him, and it is not surprising that it took this opportunity of placing Mr Cooke among the City Fathers. Mr Cooke made a slogan of cheaper bread for the workers a subject on which his opponent might have been supposed to have inside information. Mr Cooko may have the economic recipe, and :f ho can produce it in the council his election will have been justified. It is a sad fact, however, that the ideals of an election too frequently dissolve when the seat is won, and the electors of Sydenham will probably not ho disappointed if the price of bread remains at Gd over the counter and GJd delivered in spite of Councillor Cooko. The election was interesting because it resulted in the reduction of the Labour minority in the council. Government by party is frequently deplored, but New Zealand seems to have made up it s mind that it is going to apply the system in'its municipal as well as its political affairs. 'fho advent of Councillor Cooko should give ail added interest to council meetings. aU " anti ” of the deepest dye, and though he has been regarded by Ins associates and opponents alike with a sort of good-humoured tolerance, no doubt exists as to his sincerity. It „ I b , e “Cresting to observe* what effect his municipal responsibilities will »" him. If lie can bring h„ mo ■al cheaper bred, to what dm, heights may he not aspire?
