TO-MORROW’S POLLS.
Tho ratepayers of the city and suburbs have to decide to-morrow whether they will authorise the Tramway Board to proceed with tho raising of loans to carry out improvements and extensions of their services. The test that is pioperly applied to such applications is whether the proposed works are necessary and progressive. Viewed fro n that standpoint all the argument is in favour of the loan. Tho whole city must benefit if tho system is placed in a' position in which its earning capacity will bo increased and its usefulness to tho people enlarged. There are local differences of opinion icgarding somo of tho proposals, but the board will, no doubt, give due weight to representations which may be made. In- regard to the Drainage Board’s poll, the board has put forward a proposal to extend the sewage area, and loan proposals will follow if the extension is approved, The extension of the system is undoubtedly in tho interests of tho health of the city. Systems that were considered good enough for an older generation are now regarded as barbarous, and there is a demand for the widest adoption of more wholesome methods.
