TO-MORROW’S MATCH. CANTERBURY TEAM NOT COMPLETE. NOTES ON WELLINGTON PLAYERS. Very grave dissatisfaction exists in cricketing circles in Christchurch at the failure of the sole selector (Mr TV, S. Patrick) to announce tho complete Canterbury team. Up till uoou to-day only eight places were tilled, and the secretary of the .Association (Mr E : . E. Luttrell) had received no answer to urgent telegrams sent yesterday to Mr Patrick, who was expected to retiiru to-day from the south. This afternoon, however, Mr Luttrell received a telegram put m at Dunedin last night, selecting Dr Foster and G. E. Evans. This leaves the Canterbury team us follows ; J. ,H. Bennett (doubtful). B. C. Blunt, L. R. Bnmton C. E. Evans P’. S. Frstcr J. Gray J. E. M’Ewin TV. R. Patrick D. Reeso D. Sandman A. TV. Thomas. The selection has been unsatisfactory from the commencement. The omission of Evans, of Riccarton, was commonly regarded as a blunder, bub an even worse error appeared to he made in the passing over of B. B. Wood, who is probably the finest batsman in New Zealand. Wood’s selection at the eleventh hour, after two other players had found themselves unable to play, further complicated the situation, for Wood, although eager to play, had made arrangements to go to Wellington, and if ho had known of his selection a couple of days earlier, ho would have been able to play. Bennett’s breakdown on Saturday and Whitta's refusal to play left Canterbury players in an unfortunate state of suspense, and although there is only one place to fill (apart from emergencies) the position is still unsatisfactory. THE WELLINGTON TEAM. VERY LITTLE CHANGE. Tile Wellington team arrived in Christchurch this morning in Tory good heart. The team differs little from that of last year, the chief absentee ffeing Hidcllestone, who was probably the best all-round player on his side, although the match was pulled out of the firo by Brice, the captain, who is with tho team again. The team to play Canterbury is as follows; } TV. S. Brie© (captain), right-hand bat and fast bowler, with very lino averages this season with bat and ball. W. G. Baker, right-hand hat and change howler. Has made a couplo of centuries this season. George Baker, right-hand bat. VV- Condliffe, wicket-keeper, and a good right-hand hat. • “rf left-hand bat (the only ono in the team) and right-hand bowler. C. G. Wilson, right-hand hat, in rery good form. 33. Marris, slow googly bowler and good right-hand hat. H. Lambert, first-class right-hand bat and good’medium-paco bowler H. M’Girr, line bat and fust, bowler. J. Hutchings, good hat and slow bowler. 11. E- Burton, very free right-hand bat. The emergencies who will go on to Dunedin with the team are E. Smvrk (slow bowler) ami W.‘ Garrod (fast bowler), ."murk shares with Hutchings the reputation of a verv fine fieldsman, particularly at cover point. Travelling with the team arc Mr J. Fanning, Mr B. A. Marris, sen.. Air f Eyoskcy and Mr T. Stephens, all of whom take a keen interest in cricket in Wellington. An anonymous Wellington donor has u fo ’; Wellington player that renders the best service to his side during the match. The award will be made by Mr J. Fanning and the two umpires.
