OBITUARY.
ROBERT AHERNE. Mr Robert Aherno, whose death at the ago of seventy-four years, occurred yesterday, was a well known personality m North Canterbury in the early days of the province. Ho camo out to New Zealand in the sixties, and tor a short time was employed as a stockman in tho Oxford.district. He- afterwards secured a position as assistant in a general store at Rangiora, and subsequently was engaged as a coach driver on ono of tho mail routes in tho north of tho province. Later he became clerk to tho Mandevillo and Rangiora Road Board, a position which he held for several years, when he relinquished it to become chief North Canterbury agent and correspondent for tho “Lyttelton Times ” Company, resident first nt Rangiora and afterwards at Kaiapoi. Subsequently ho was engaged on the literary staff of the " Lyttelton Times ” for some years, and subsequently he was engaged in journalism in Wellington, tho West Const and* other places. While resident, in Rangiora, the late Mr Aherne was a prominent member of the Masonic Lodge, and was also secretary of the Rangiora Oddfellows’ Lodge and a Provincial Grandmaster of the Ashley District Oddfellows’ Lodge.
