FEDERAL ELECTIONS.
DEFEAT Of REFERENDUM PROPOSALS. By Telegraph— Press Association—Copyright Australian Mid N.Z. Cable Association. (Received December 16, 2.10 p.ra.) SYDNEY, December 16. Mr C. Wallace, the labourite who surrendered the safe West Sydney nomination to Mr T. J. Ryan, was defeated for Nepean. Small as the Referendum figures still are, the trend is such that it is practically a'foregone conclusion that the proposals will be defeated 1 . Apparently the electorate has accepted the condition that Mr Hughes already possesses, or can take sufficient power under the Constitution, to deal adequately with the matters desired, without any further extension of powers.
