CHRISTMAS NUMBER.

the “stir uwETims,

AN EMBLEM, A SLOGAN AND

A BOOM.

PRIZES FOR THE WINNERS.

AN EXTENSION OF TIME.

The " Star” will Issue a Christmas Number on Christmas Eve, which will offer many attractions to subscribers. Arrangements have been made for the publication of special stories and illustrations. The issue, which will consist of sixteen pages, will make a special appeal to young folk. Particulars will he given later. It was originally intended to dose the competitions on Monday, but requests having been made for an extension of time, the closing dale will now be Saturday, December ‘2D. Entries must be in the hands of the Editor on that date. It is desired that the Christmas Number should do something to help the Province, and it has been decided that this may be achieved by means of several compo l itions, with prizes for the winners. The subjects and the amounts of the prizes are:—

AN EMBLEMATIC DESIGN

An emblematic design is wanted by the Canterbury Progress League. It is a. subject which may profitably occupy the skill and taste of artists, young and old. What is wanted is something distinctively associated with the province. There is a wide field open to the imagination of the artist. Flowers, trees, birds, animals, scenery, industries—the whole bountiful field of art and nature isthero to be drawn on. The "Star” will give a first prize of £3 3s, and a second prize of £1 10s 6d for the best designs submitted. The designs should be in lino drawings.

SLOGAN FOR CANTERBURY. Canterbury needs a slogan. So far, “Advance Canterbury” has done duty, but it is neither original nor inspiring. What is wanted is a word or a phrase with a punch in it, suitable for adoption as the motto of a body which is making the progress of Canterbury its business. Can you think of that word or phrase? The “Star” will give £2 2s for the winning slogan, and £1 Is for that placed second.

A GREAT PLACE.

The advantages of Canterbury as a place in which to live and work, and the attractions which it offers for the investment of capital, embrace a subject which can be succinctly and intelligently treated in a brief essay. What would you say to “ boom ” Canterbury to a man who bad energy, money or leisure to spend in New Zealand? Could you tell him in 160 words why ho should come to Canterbury P Try it. The “ Star ” will pay £2 2s for the best recommendation, and £1 Is for the second best.

The competitions will close on Saturday, December 20. The results will be announced in the Christmas Number of the “ Star,” m which the winning efforts will be reproduced, along with a selection from the works of the other competitors.

All entries must be addressed to THE EDITOR, “ STAB,” CHRISTCHURCH.
