CHRISTMAS NUMBER.

THE “STAR" COMPETITIONS, 0 HELP CANTERBURY ALONG. AN EMBLEM, A SLOGAN AND A BOOM. PRIZES FOR THE WINNERS. The “ Star ” will issue a Christmas Number on Christmas Eve, which will offer many attractions to subscribers. Arrangements have been made for the publication of special stories and illustrations. The issue, which will consist cf sixteen pages, will make a special appeal to young folk. Particulars will bo given later. It is desired that th© Christmas Number should do something to help the Province, and it has been decided that this may be acl.ieved by means of several competitions, with prizes for tho winners. The subjects and the amounts tho prizes are:— AN EMBLEMATIC DESIGN, An emblematic design is wanted by the Canterbury Progress League. It is a subject which may profitably occupy the skill and tasto of artists, young and old. What is wanted is something distinctively associated with the province. There is a wide field open to the imagination of the artist. Flowers, trees, birds, animals, scenery, industries'—tho whole bountiful • field of art and nature is there to be drawn on. The “Star” will give a first prize of £3 3s, and a second prize of £1 10s Gd for tho best designs submitted. Tho designs should lie in line drawings. SLOGAN FOR CANTERBURY. Canterbury needs a slogan. So far, “Advance Canterbury” lias done duty, but it is neither original nor inspiring. What is wanted is a word or a phrase with a punch in it, suitable for adoption as tho motto of a body which is making the progress of Canterbury its business. Can you think of that word or phrase? The “Star” will give £2 2s for the winning slogan, and £1 Is for that placed second. A GREAT PLACE. The advantages of Canterbury as • .a place in which to live and work, and the attractions which it offers for tho investment of capital, embrace a subject which can be succinctly and intelligently treated in a brief essay. What would you say to “ boom ” Canterbury to a man who had ene-gy, money or leisure to spend in New Zealand? Could you tell him in 150 words nhy he should come to Canterbury? Try it. The “ Star” will pay £2 2s for the best recommendation, and, £1 Is for tho second best. The competitions will close on Monday, December 15. The icsults will be announced in the Christmas 'Number of tho “Star,” m -ebich the winning efforts will be reproduced, along with a selection from tho works of the other competitors.
