MARAROA ENCOUNTERS HEAVA WEATHER. Leaving W’Hngton at 7.55 p.m. on Tuesday. i.m lory steamer Mararoa encountered a somberly gale and hail squalls, on entering Cook Strait. It was not until 1.20 yesterday morning that she passed Cape Campbell, and 7.1/ when she was off Kaikoura. Tho vessel was awash tho whole journey, the weather not easing off until tllo Peninsula was reached. Fortunately, the vessel had good coal, and there was an ample supply of steam, hut ah though fulj-speed was kept up throughout the trip it was not till 44u yesterday that she drew alongside the ferry wharf at Lyttelton. The nassengers, particularly tho women, suffered considerably from sea-sickness, and, with a few exceptions, did not venture up for meals. The trip was ono df flic longest in point of time that has been made by the Mararoa whilst in the ferry service. When tho Mararoa left on the returp trip last evening, at 6.40, tho weather had again become normal, the wind having subsided.
