*T . +' The Governor-General, Lady Liter pool, and suite arrived at Nelson on a farewell visit on Saturday morning. A holiday was observed during tho morning, and a very large gathering of cit izeus attended a civic welcome at tho church steps. The vice-regal party afterwards made a round of visits to colleges and oilier institutions, and were entertained at luncheon by the City Council. Rain in tho aftemum necessitated the abandonment of a. projected motor rim through the orchard districts and receptions at country centres. Iho parly sailed in the Tutanekai in tho evening for Westport. At St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Ashburton, yesterday, the Rev. Nelson H. Wright, who is leaving this week to take up his new appointment in the North Island, preached his farewell sermon. He announced to his congregations that he had been requested hy the Vestry to state that tho Rov. A, Wiseman, tho present vicar of Loeston, had been appointed as his successor, and that Mr Wiseman, who had had considerable experience in Array chaplain’s work with the Canadian regiments during the late war, would assume his new duties early m January. Deceased became Land Transfer Draughtsman in Wellington in 1837, and was appointed Chief Draughtsman in the Web lingtou District Land) Office ig May, 1908. In April of th© following year he was promoted to tho position" of Chief Draughtsman in tho Head Office of the Land and Survey Department. He retired on superannuation, hut returned to Government work during tin war period. Mr Davis, who was a son of the late Mr Rowland Robert Davis, of Kealkill, Christchurch, took a keen interest in outdoor sports, and in his early clavs in Canterbury ho was a fino runner and oarsman. He was a prominent churchman, and for some years hold a seat on th© Vestry of St. Thomas's, Wellington South.
