DISCUSSED BY BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Sumner Burgesses’ Association was licit! in the Council Chambers on Saturday evening, Mr H. W. Hoslop (president) being in tha chair. F. Allen, headmaster of tlie Sumner School, outlined the objects of the movement. Swimming and life saving, ho said, were amongst the compulsory subjects in most schools. Owing to tho absence of baths whore systematic teaching could bo earned out, tho children of the Sumner Borough were behind those of other districts where baths were used. The amount of bath ing on the beach made it very neces sary that all the children should learn to swim. Three projects wero at present being considered—a salt-water bath to be filled by electric pumping; an excavated bath, self-filling, in tho I north side of Cave Book; and a bathing . enclosure to the west of the pier. Mr Bilson was interesting himself in the matter, and it was generally felt that tho health and training of the children would he neglected in the summer months until a good bath was built. Mr H. Buttle, the chairman of tho Life Saving Club, endorsed l what the previous speaker had stated. It was decided to approach the borough representative, pointing out that the ladies as well as the men were utterly dissatisfied.
