PROSPECTS OF HARBOUR. ' Speaking on the prospects of oponing up the Waimakariri for sea connection with other, markets. Mr J. H. Blackwell stated at yesterday’s meetnig of the North" Canterhurv Freezing Company that the bar had not been satisfactory for two years, because the southern set carried it southward, leaving the river running narallel with the beach for two miles, and the expected break through near Kaiapoi did not come. The board proposed to erect a training wall to give a continuous bar, but. the Rivers Commission dealing with drainage proposed to take the gror through at a point just below Whites bridge, and let it enter the sea near its present, outlet. Ho did not think this scheme had anv chance of succeeding, but meanwhile-the Waimakariri Harbour Board was obtaining a report’ on its first proposal from Mr H. hj. foogood, and during the next year it was : hoped to put .'matters on a practical basis. • . ; Mr G. D. Greenwood said there was not the_ slightest difficulty- in the way of making the river navigable. Fifty years ago it was flooded with craft, and the .same, could be. the case day. The Workers! Educational Association students held a social evening in the city classrooms on Tuesday, Mr F. Cartwright- presiding. An enjoyable’ and profitable time was spent, by all present. - Members from all the classes including RedclifFs and Riccartdn, atl tended, and several tutors were present.', The evening was devoted to talks on W.E.A. matters, with music and refreshments. The large attendance and the enthusiasm shown by students and friends for the advancement of the association, augur well‘for a successful session of the W^E-A.The first afternoon W.B.A, ramble, will be 'to th© Port Hills on Saturday.
