AN EXAGGERATED REPORT.
A brief report on gambling was read at last evening's meeting' of the Council of Churches by the Rev E. P. Blamires. The report had been sent in by tho Rev J. J. North, who was absent through illness, and contained a statement to the effect that bookmakers were aidea and abetted by toe. Government, who allowed these men to receive telegrams under false names. The Rev S. Lawrv said that it was enough to blame the Government, when it did wrong. lie had |not.%seon any tittle of evidence that -the Government sanctioned these changes of names by bookmakers. As a matter: of fact & bookmaker was prosecuted, "and then he changed his name. Ministers were doing their cause harm when they made exaggerated statements and imputed wrong motives. (Hear. hear). The chairman (Rev W. J. Williams) pointed out that Mr North was not present. The Rev Lawrv: But are we to allow his statements to to into the papers? It was then decided to go into committee. and, on resuming in open meeting, the chairman said there was nothing to report. ■ ’ , ' .
