On Saturday afternoon the ladv war workers of Redcliffs entertained Mr and Mrs R. Baxter, who are leaving the district for Papanui, at a garden party at <- Te Rae,” the home of Mr and. Mrs A. W. Beaven. The afternoon was perfect, and the outlook from the grounds, together with the charming surroundings, contributed not a little to make the function a distinct success. During the afternoon a programme of music was contributed by an orchestra specially engaged from the city. Speeches were made by the Rev E. C. W. Powell, and Mr G. Stening, both of whom voiced the regret the residents, particularly those members of the church, felt 1 at losing Mr and Mrs Baxter, both of whom had loyally supported church work and been ever ready with valuable assistance. The Hon J. Barr, M.L.C.. Mayor of Sumner, stated that he was delighted to be present to represent the relatives of the returned lads. Besides this, in Red Cross and Lady Liverpool activities their guests had been amongst the most patriotic workers in the borough, and they would always be remembered for their great contribution to the borough’s patriotic efforts during the Great War. Mr Baxter suitably acknowledged the good wishes of the speakers, stating that the stay of Mrs Baxter and himself in Redcliffs, though not a very long one, had boon very enjoyable from the fact that they had received kindness on every hand. An interesting feature of the afternoon was a miniature rifle match, ladies v. gentlemen, in which the former were declared the winners. Amongst those present were; Mesdames Pidgeon, Marquet. Keig, Bartley, Berryman, Scott, Ashman, J. H. Gibbs, Shaw, Hamilton (Papanui), Hines. Williams, Carter, Sibbald, H. J. Yates, Bullock, F. Hamilton. Burrows. W. D. Kirkpatrick, B.
