Miss A- Piper (Oamaru) is visiting Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs Albert Ek'd ling (Birdling’s Flat) .are staying at the Clarendon. Mr and Mrs F. White have returned to Blenheim, after a stay in Christchurch. Mrs W. Boulton and Mr Clive Boulton, Chester Street, have gone to the North Island. Mr and Mrs John . Webster (Kaikoura) are expected in town to-day, arid will stay at the Clarendon. Nurse B. Nurse B. Maxficld and Nurse M’Gee (Auckland), who have been visiting the West Coast, arrived in Christchurch last evening.

The wedding took place last week at the home of the bride’s parents, Ke~ muera (Auckland), of Miss Dorothy Garrard, only daughter of Mr and Mrs C. W. Garrard, formerly of Christchurch, to Captain W. J. Smeeton, M.0., eldest son of Mr and Sirs W. J. Smeeton, of “ Binswood,,” Mount Hobson. Miss Ida Cooke was bridesmaid and Lieutenant W. Woreley best man. An interesting engagement is that of bliss Lydia Field, the. second daughter of Mr W. H. Field. M.P., and Mrs Field, of Wellington Terrace, to Captain Noel Pharazyn, MJP-, only son of Mrs GeVakl Pharazyn, of Tinakori Road, Wellington. Captain Pharazyn only came out to New Zealand on furlough a few _ months ago, accompanied by his sistei, Miss Eleanor Pharazyn, who has "been doing war work in England; and as he intends leaving before the end of the year to rejoin his regiment, the marriage ’will take place very shortly. Miss .Edith Golding, whose marriage takes place next week, was entertained yesterday afternoon by the Rangiora Croquet Club, of which sho is a member. A tournament was played on the lawns in perfect weather, for prizes given by Mesdames H. Jones and HM. Chappell. After a dainty afternoon tea had been served the president (Mrs H. Jones) offered felicitations to the guest, and on behalf of the club members presented her with a set of stainless table cutlery. Miss Golding suitably acknowledged the gift, and thanked her friends for the very pleasant aftea-noon. The winners of the tournament were:—Miss C. Tutton and Mr A. E Golding. A consolation prize was won bp Mrs O. I. Jennings.

On IV ednesday evening the dancing ass in connection with the Christchurch Technical College Past and Senior Students’ Association, held, its break-up dance, which was attended by a Large number of old students. An exceedingly enjoyable time was spent, and dancing was kept up till a late hour.

Many subjects were dealt with by the conference, among them being the need lor direct feminine supervision of the ln a ll the State schools and also for improvement in the system of industrial schools and schools for defectives In factories the need was clamant for more women inspectors—vith practical industrial experience, a-nd possessing a status equal to that of men inspectors. The desirability of leciprocity between Great Britain and jNew . Zealand in the matter of old age pensions was urged- The Dominion’s responsibility with regard to Samoa was touched upon, and the opinion expressed that indentured labour should not be employed, but that efforts should be directed towards inducing the to work.
