LAWN TENNIS.

ASHBURTON CLUB. Tbe annual meeting of the Ashburton Rawn Tennis Club was held on Wednesday evsTung, Mr F. W. Seldon presiding. The annual report stated that during the past season competitions were held for prises generously donated bv the president (Mr Hugo Pridfllanderl, the winners being:— Ladies’ doubles. Mrs Kennedy and Miss Boddmgton; combined doubles, Mr H. Christian and Mass Black. Tbe balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £35 4s 3d, The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Officers were elected as follows:—President. Mr Hugo Friedlander; vice-presidents, Messrs R. Bell and T. Bullock; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. L. Seldon; committee, Messrs A. H. Magson, H. Cooke, C. Waterston, F. tV. Seldom D. Friedlander. H. A. Boddington and D. if. Montgomery: auditor, Mr C. Vfaterston; delegates to Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, Mis£ G- H Buchanan, and E. J. Taylor; delegates to Ashburton Sports Association, Messrs F. W. Seldon. D. Friedlander and D. M. Montgomery. Eight new' members were elected. It was decided to hold the opening day on October 29, when the usual competitions wit! be held. The secretary was instructed to ..write to Mr G. H. Buchanan thanking him for his services to the club, and expressing regret at his departure from Ashburton. Votes of thanks were passed to the chairman and the retiring secretary.

NEW BRIGHTON CLUB. The twenty-fifth Annual meeting of the New Brighton Lawn Tennis Club was held m the Borough Council Chambers. The president (Air R. C. Bishop! occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of members Tk® cnnual report and balance-sheet were adopted, on tho motion of the president, who congratulated the members on tho very satisfactory position of the club.

The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—Patron, the. Rev H. H. Mathias; president, Mr R. C. Bi/hop ; vice-presidents, the Hon G. W. Russell M.P.X Dr W. E. Stevens, Messrs F. Kibble white (Magmr), Gilbert Jackson, C. H. Opie, T. Bullock, W. G. Lockwood and J. Checkley; honorary secretary and treasurer. Mr R. Browning: assistant secretary, Mr F. J. Hutchison; delegate to Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. Mr R. Browning; management committee, Mrs Browning, Misses Spratt and M’Cree. and Messrs G. W. Bishop, J. Bosomwortfa. A. Pratt and F. G. Eames. Mr Gilbert Jackson was reappointed sole selector and handicap per for the ensuing year.

The date for the opening of iho season was left in the hands of the management committee.

The question of granting visitors the use of the courts on payment of a nominal lee was discussed at length, and it was resolved: —“ That visitors he allowed to use the courts on payment of 5s each per month, but that such concession docs not include the use of the courts on Saturday afternoons,” Tho_ matter of entering teams for the association’s interclub competitions was discussed, and was subsequently referred to the management committee with power ip act. Appreciative' reference was made to iho fact that Mr R. C. Bishop had held the position of president since the inception of the club, he having personally helped to lay down the first court. The hope was expressed by members that ho would bo spared for many years to fill the ■ position.

It was resolved that club members who have been on active service be made honorary members for the ensuing season. Mr Browning was heartily thanked for his services as honorary secretary and treasurer for the past eight years, and votes ol thanks were passed to the Mayor for the use of the Council Chambers, and to the president for presiding. OP AW A CLTIB. The annual meeting of the Opawa Tennis Club (Incorporated) was presided over by Mr P. Henries (chairman), and there was a large attendance of members. The committee’s annual report showed that the past season had been cuccessful, both in regard to finance and the standard of piay. The treasurer’s statement showed that receipts amounted to £54 os 3d and expenditure to £47 14s Sd, leaving a credit balance of £S iOs 7d This, together with the amount brought forward at the beginning of tbe season, leaves a cash balance of £l9 11s. Tho report and balance-sheet were adopted. Tho election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mr P. Henries; vice-presidents, Messrs G. L. Bowron, Murray, F. Anderson, P. Wilding, K.C., and J. B. Garland; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr F. Maples; honorary auditor, Mr J. W. Hillary; afternoon tea supervisor, Miss E. Bowron.

It was decided to hold tho opening day of the ensuing season on Saturday. October 18. A hearty vote of rhajika was passed to the ladies for providing afternoon tea during the past year.

SUMNER TENNIS AND CROQUET CLUB. A meeting of tho committee of the Sumner Tennis and Croquet Club was held last night, when Dr Gosael presided over a good attendance.

Dr Gossct was elected president of the club, and Mr 0. B. Clayton was appointed honorary Secretary. ■ ,lt was decided to enter junior and senior croquet teams in the Canterbury Croquet Association’s flag competitions. The question of top-dressing the tennis courts was left in the hands of Dr Slater and Mr Clayton. Complete arrangements were made for opening the season on October 11.

The question of laying down a now fullsize croquet green was left in the hands of Messrs C. JT- Hamilton and B. A. Johnson. Twelve new members wore elected.

KAIAPOI CLUB. The Kaiapoi Tennis Chib opened its season at the courts in Damley’s Square yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance of members and. their friends, and friendly games were played. The president of the club, Mr L. B. Evans, provided a very , enjoyable afternoon tea.
