RACING AND TROTTING.

; (By “ ARGUS ”) Nominations for the Ashburton County Racing Club’s spring meeting will close at fire o’clock this evening. Wardancer was. responsible for a good gallop on Saturday. He went a bit over a' mile and a quarter, his three-year-old; sister, Warlove, assisting him over the last mile, and they were both O strongly at the end of their task, ancer is a proved stayer, and he will have to-be reckoned with in the New Zealand Cup. Warlove is untried so far, hut she gives promise of developing into a good stake earner. She is booked to open her racing career at Wingatui next week. ■ After being tried out in a minor event on the opening day, she will take on the Dunedin Guineas, a race which should provide a good lino to her future, prospects. Gay Lad was given a sound gallop over a mile on Saturday, and registered fair time. He was stopping at the end, but this was scarcely a matter for surprise, as he had done very little work for nearly a week. Royal Star, who claims an engagement in the New Zealand Cup, has not been set any long tasks so far, but he has got through a lot of useful work, while at the same time he has been built np in condition. Royal Stag and Miss Mimic, who will represent Sir George Clifford in Hie Dunedin Guineas next week, were worked in company over a mile on Saturday. As usual, Mias Mimic showed more pace than her mate in the early stages, but they were on terms at the finish. The time was not fast, but probably both of them could have done a bit better. Macduff, who is to make ids first appearance for the season at Trentham, shaped well over tho same ground with Heathercote. With Nightraider, Steepholm and Acquittal also available, the Chokebore Lodge stable has a useful-looking team of three-year-olds this season. The two-year-old colt Winter Wind (Antagonist—Wind Whistle) has been shaping well in three-furlong sprints lately. He is a well grown and good looking colt, with an attractive style of moving, and on track form he should prove one of the best of the Riccarton candidates for early two-year-old races. The : Coronet gelding, Conn the Shaughrann, is being hacked about by P. Holmes, preparatory to resuming active work. Jazz, the two-year-old gelding by Sol-ferino-—Stardancer, has been under veterinajy treatment for a few days and it may he found necessary to cancel his proposed trip nest week to Wingatui, where he is engaged in the M’Lean {Stakes.

The Australian bred two-year-olds, owned by Mr G. D- Greenwood, who arrived from Sydney last week, are a gelding by Yarco —Faraway, filly by Ctmltrun—Quietest, and filly by The Th© youngsters - were broken in and worked for a time \ at Handwick, but it is improbable that they will "be raced for some time. For his win in the Higgle Handicap at the Wanganui Jockey Oulb’s meeting on Saturday, Hurry Up has incurred a 51b penalty for the New Zealand Cup. bringing his weight up to 7et. The report that It, J. Mason would probably return to the Dominion at the close of the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting, without waiting for the Victorian fixtures, has received strong confirmation in the nomination of Gloaming, Afterglow, Karo and Rossini for events to be decided at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting. Only a few Canterbury stables are represented among the nominations for the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting, but the team from this quarter may number nearly twenty horses. Apart from Gloaming. Karo, Afterglow and Rossini, who are expected to return from Sydney in time for the meeting, R. J. Mason has Falstaif and Lovesick.; Cutts Brothers have Macduff, Acquittal and the two-year-old Moorfowl; M. Hobbs has Gay Lad, . Flight Commander, Tortrix and the two-year-old filly by-Bozeman—Peace; F. D. Jones has Burrangong, Mustard Pot, Mandrake and the two-year-old gelding by Boniform—-Big Blast; and R. Emerson has Moorabbe; while from the YaldhnrSt stable R. O’Donnell has , Melee, Orange Bitters, Starland and Golden Crozier. The Champion Plate, the mile and a quarter weight-for-ag© event at the spring meeting of the Wellington Rac- , ing Club, has provided some interesting contests in the past, and everything points to another fine race next month.' The presence of Desert Geld and Gloaming will he quite sufficient to ensure success, but with Affectation, Warplane. Hetaua, Starland and Motuihi engaged as well, the race should serve as a dress rehearsal for tho New Zealand Derby. The imported horse Gay Lad figures among the nominations for the Champion Plate, to be run over a mile and a quarter, at weight-for-age, at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting next month. Ho is flying pretty high in taking such a race, but it should serve well as a preliminary to the New Zealand Cup. When Probity (Bezonian —Tortulla) fell and terminated her career in the Putiki Hack Race Handicap at Wanganui on Thursday she was making her first appearance in the colours of her new owner, who has adopted the nom-de-conrse of “Mr J. Walsingham.’’ Probity was among the winners at the last Wellington meeting, and claimed an engagement in the New Zealand Cup. New Zealand Cup candidates are very much, in evidence among the nominations for the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting next month. The form at Trentbam should provide a good line to Eiccarton prospects. C., Emerson received a severe shaking when Probity fell with him at Wanganui last Thursday He was unable to rid© on Saturday, and he has gone to Hastings, where he will have a rest.
