Mr Robert M’Dowell has been elected to the vacancy on the Malvern County Council. A cablegram from Sydney announces the death of Dr F. M. Gellatly, Director of the Federal Bureau of Science and Industry. > The North Canterbury Hospital Board at its meeting yesterdar, appointed Dr C. T. Hand Newton honorary physician at the hospital, and Dr W. Bates honorary radiologist. Advice has been received that FlightLieutenant P. A. Turner, of North Canterbury, has received tho Distinguished Flying Cross. This officer has £ist returned from active service. Mr J. D. Million, a member of tho Canterbury Repatriation Board, who was granted leave of absence to go on a visit to England, returned to Christchurch on Saturday, and last night was present at a meeting of the board. The late Mr Ephraim Greenwood, who lost his life in the Tainui disaster on September 16, was a survivor of several previous wrecks, including the Samson, Hauraki, Kiwi and Moa. He was Sirt-owner in the Hauraki with Captain arvey. One of the foundation members of the Marine Engineers’ Institute, and its oldest active member, he had been at sea for forty-five years, with the exception of a few years ashore while engaged in the sawmilling industry at Pahautanui and Te Roti. Openhanded and generous, his genial presence will be sadly missed by his many friends, and particularly at Wellington and along the waterfront at the various coastal ports. He is survived bv one son, Mr R. E. Greenwood, of Lohurn; by four daughters,' Mrs F. N. Martin (Kilbirnie), Mrs lan Brock (Matata), Mrs R. H. Grace .(Palmerston North) and Miss Greenwood (Wellington); and by six grandchildren. His wife, one of Wellington’s best known vocalists, predeceased him last May. The interment took gjace in the family burial ground at ixarori last Saturday, the pall-bearers being members of the Marine Engineers’ Institute.
