EDUCATION.
CONFERENCE OF BOARDS. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 24. The conference of Education Boards opened this afternoon, under the presidency of Mr T. Forsyth, chairman of tho VVellington Education Board. After the delegates had been accorded a civic welcome. Sir Francis Bel], Minister of Education, addressed them. He said the Government had to provide first for the absolute needs ol* education. They would certainly have more demands than the money would fulfil. They would have to try to make a fair distribution, hut it was absolutely certain to his mind that they would fail to satisfy everybody. Whatever their degree of satisfaction, ho hoped they would give the Government credit for trying to be just. , The director' of Educktion (Dr W ,J. Anderson) also addressed the delegates briefly. ° The conference passed a resolution “That this conference is of opinion that that national system of free, secular and compulsory education shouid be maintained.” The conference has adjourned until Friday.
