Sirs F. O’Brien (Sydney) has come to Christchurch on a visit. * Mr and Mrs Durham (Wellington) arc staying at the Clarendon. Dr and Mrs T. T. Thompson (Dunedin) are staying at Warner’sMajor and Mrs Shand have gone to Wellington en route to America. Mrs Quane returned to Christchurch to-day after a visit to 'Wellington. Miss-May- Bean (Addington) left last evening on- a holiday visit to Wellington. ‘ Miss Kathleen Anderson has returned to her home after a short holiday in Akaroa. .Mrs Charles Campbell returned to North Canterbury to-day after a short stay in town. Miss Rita Gibson, who has been staving at Government House, Wellington, has returned to Christchurch. Miss Agnes Scully arrived in Christchurch from the north to-day, and is staying at the United Service. The Misses Cos (Timam), who have been the guests of Mrs Ross, Garden Road, have returned to their home. Mi's T. G. Blakely left on Tuesday night for. Wellington to meet her netphew, Lieutenant Donald H. Donaldson, N.Z.5.0., who is returning by the Taimli. Miss M. Osborn, matron of the special school at Otekaike, Oamaru, after a short holiday spent in Christchurch and Ashburton, leaves for the south tomorrow. Mr Harley Thomas (Java,), of the hastern i/s tension Cable Company, is spending part of his vacation in Christciiurclp His mother' came to New Zealand by the Corinthic and is, with tier son, staying at the United Service. A very enjoyable evening was spent fit the Halswell Hall on Thursday last, the occasion being the return ' dance given by the ladies ofTialswell to the bachelors of that district. The hall, which was prettily decorated in green, and gold,-was filled to its utmost capacity. A varied programme of dances was held, to music supplied by Mr W. Betted’s orchestra. The arrangements for the evening were carried out in a manner which reflected credit on the honorary secretary, Miss Sullivan. No small measure of praise is duo to the members of the Red Cross and J-rady .wverpool Societies for the generous work they have carried out in connection with the return of soldiers. Men from the Hororata, Tainui and Lormtbac who have passed through tho Christchurch railway station during the past few days, on their way south hare been provided with refreshments ond a cheery welcome. They were, not slow to show their appreciation of the kindness of the ladies engaged in the work, all of whom have had a verv busy tame latelv.
