The Riccarton. ploughed track was open on Friday and Saturday, when a few horses did slow work on it. The rain which set in yesterday morning will put the track oat of commission for a few days, hut with some more dry weather it should soon be the popular galloping ground for fast work. Warlove. after being off the scene for a few days, suffering from a poisoned leg, is again being ridden, and she will resume active work this week. The Railway Department has removed many of the restrictions which hare been in operation for nearly three months. The announcement that horses would be carried by train came very opportunely, and resulted in an excellent list of > acceptances for the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting, to be held this week. A good response is also anticipated for the Kurow meeting, while the Dunedin Jockey Club is assured of big fields, including a strong contingent of horses from Riccarton, for its spring fixture next month. Upwards of twenty horses from Riccarton stables figure among the acceptors for the first day of the Geraldine meeting, while Mr G. L. Stead’s Yaldnurst stable has three representatives, including the three-year-old Starland, who met with considerable support recently for the New Zealand CupForm Dp, a six-year-old gelding by Formative—Puraanng,“came to an untimely end at Taubcrenikau on Wednesday. He was found early in the morning bleeding at the nostril and foaming at the mouth, and though a veterinary surgeon was quickly in attendance he died soon after. A postmortem revealed that the horse had twisted an intestine. He had got cast m. his box and evidently injured himself in trying to get up. Form Up was a successful performer, who did his early racing in the colours of Mr H. E. irovrtbeck, being owned later by Air H. W. Brown. In his first season he won uSOsovs in stakes, and the nest season he won the Stewards’ Handicap and 1220sovs in stakes. Last season his stake earnings dropped to 410sovb. A 6 the Grand National meeting last month he showed that he had lost none of his brilliancy by carrying top weight to victory in the Islington and Selwym Handicaps. His total earnings were just under 3000aovs. • T?i. 6 a Zealand horse m the Australian spring campaign waa credited to Gloaming, who was successful m the Spring Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday. There was a good deal of merit in the_ performance, as Wolaroi, France Viridis and Cetigne, who followed Mr 6. D, Greenwood’s representative home, arc among the top class horses in New South Wales. The result shows that Gloaming is back to something like his best form, and he Jookb certain to play a prominent part m the rich weight-for-age events at the big spring fixtures, commencing with the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting, which will open in a fortnight! Mr W. G. Stead’s three-year-old colt, Golden Bubble, must be regarded aa very unlucky in his early Australian efforts. At Sydney Tatfeersall’a meeting a week ago he was narrowly beaten in the Novice Handicap, while on Saturday he lost ibe Rosehill Guineas by a head. Elf acre, who beat the Hawke’s Hay colt on Saturday, was second to Richmond Main in the Chelmsford Htakea a week earlier. The season’s torm, so far, makes liim look a colt above the average, so that Golden Hubble has established himself as more than usefuk _ Elfacre is by the succese- ™ .paghsh sure, Lxnacre, from the New Zealand-bred mare Bewitch, by Birkenhead—Witehet, by Sir Lancelot—Elflock, by NordenfeWt from Elfin, a sister to Martini Henry, by Musket—Sylvia. for the Kurow Jockey GTib s meeting will close to-night. A payment for the New Zealand Irottmg Cup is duo at noon on Wednesday* spring meeting of the Ashburton Gomty Racing Club will be held on ’October 16 and 17. Nominations will close next Monday. Hush-a-Bya and Waimatao. who were both nominated for the Otaki meeting, accepted for. owing to the faet that they have both met with accidents during the past few days. The foalings are reported from the Waikanae Stud:—Merrie Margaret (Bezoman—-Margarethe), hay colt (smeo dead), by Kilboy; Peace (The Officer--Content), bay colt to' Bom’°r m } ®§be (Bezoman—Bl uewater), bay mly to Bomform; Margarethe (Birken-

bead—Chant), bay colt to Boniform; Mistime (Birkenhead —Miss Never), bay filly to Boniform; Lady Jean 11. (Ja.n--Bettyfield), bay filly to Boniform; Desrina_ (Desmoud —Marina), bay filly to Boniform; Glen Helen (Treadmill — Cllenowlet). bay filly to Boniform; Snowlibe (Multifid —Snowstcll), bay colt to Bezonian; Lady Stewart (Bezoman— Sister Francis), chestnut filly to Solferino: Papilia (Birkenhead —Aphrodite). hay colt to Martian; Vicereine (Birkenhead—lloie), bay colt to Boniform. As a result of her sucess in the principal event at Otaki on Saturday, Rose Pink has incurred a. olb penalty for the New Zealand Cup, bringing her weight up to 7st filb. The Kilbroney mare started in thirty-four races last season, winning fohr times, while she was live times second and six times third. Martindale, the property at Hastings where Sid Reid intends to set up as a public trainer, is one of the oldest establishments in Hawke’s Bay, and will probably be remodelled and re-no-vated before the new occupants go in. It was owned by the late Air Percy Martin, hence the name, and is situated about a mile from Hastings, and nearly opposite the railway entrance to the course. At the Waikanae Stud, Messrs Dwan Bros.’ Northern Rose (Finland—Rose Shield) lias foaled a bay colt by Boniform. The newcomer is a half-brother to Miss Dc Vai, Treutham Hose «nd Swanee River* . The pacer Dinna Ken was destroyed last week. He met with some injuries to his back, while running in a paddock some time ago, and there appeared to be no prospect of him making a complete recovery. As a three-year-old Dinna Ken showed exceptional promise from a staying point of view ami looked as if he would develop into a hign-grade two miler. He trained off at the end of the season and never came back to his best form. In the early_ part of lus career he was trained by Nelson Brothers, who subsequently returned to Scotland. The three-year-old gelding by Brent Locanda-trom the dam of Little Tib has had to be eased in his work, on account of a slight injury whilst running in the paddock. A gelding by El Carbine, owned by Mr J. Porter, of Oamaru, is expected to Join T. G. Fox’s team this week* C. Tasker has made another start with the pacer George Hard, who is being given useful work at Addington. C. James has commenced to work Huon Drift, who was purchased by him some months ago. At present the pacer is very much in the rough, after his long spell from the track. J. M’Dermott has a three-year-old gelding, by Petereta from that good trotter Rosalie, in his stable. H© is a trotter but it will be some time before he is ready to race. Die pacing mare Gold Queen, by King Cole—Dorothy D., is now being trained at Springfield and she may be raced at some of the West Coast meetings this season. The pacer Merry Soul is being trained by J. Wilson at Heathcote, and is fast getting into racing condition. R. J. Munro is working a promising young pacer by Driftwood from the dam of the pacer Childsdale. He is progressing satisfactorily in his work. The pacer Paul Dufault is in work at Addington. He is still on the big side and it will be some time before he is in good racing trim. ACCEPTANCES. GERALDINE RACING CLUB. [Psr Press Association.] TIMARU. September 21.
