There was a clean sheet at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. A fair sized willow tree on the bank of the Avon River in Oxford Terrace, opposite Victoria Square, unable to bear the weight of the snow, has been uprooted. City Council workmen were busily engaged this morning sawing the tree into lengths. A Wellington telegram states that a number of cases of breaking and entering warehouses and other business places have been reported recently to the police, who have arrested seven boys between nine and fifteen years of age and laid eighteen charges against them. Tho sums alleged to have been stolen by the boys amount to about £4O, but the damage done in the premises entered is considerable On Saturday afternoon the Christchurch Model Yacht Club opened its twenty-fourth season at Victoria Lake, many spectators being present. The club’s first race was sailed, a strong north-east wind favouring good time. The first heat was won by Mr Firth’s O.E-0., with Mv Ruxton’s K.N. second and Mr Jackson’s Awner third; time, 30min. At a sitting of the Juvenile Court yesterday, before Air T- A. B. Bailey, S.M., a girl, fifteen years of age, was cnarged with obtaining goods valued at £2 10s 3d from Kincaid’s. Ltd., by false pretences. Senior-Sergeant Cummings said that the girl was very untruthful. She had put the blame for what she had done on to another girl who was quite innocent- She had been found roaming the streets at three o’clock that morning. There were two further charges of false pretences against her, and a charge of breaking and entering and stealing £5. The .accused was committed to the Christchurch Receiving Home. She was also ordered to pay the value of the goods. A girl, twelve years old, charged with obtaining sums of £1 14s lid and 5s lid by false pretences, was admonished and discharged. A. boy, fourteen years of age. charged with the theft of a canary valued at 6s and a canary valued at £l, was admonished and discharged, and ordered m pay £1 foj the second canary. A child charged with having no means of subsistence was committed to the Christchurch Receiving Home.
