THE WEATHER.

CANTERBURY CONDITIONS. (BY F. L. WOOLES.) The character of the weather prevailing during August was similar to that experienced in July. The average temperatures for the two months were about the same, August being slightly higher, though the extremes of heat and cold experienced in July, due to the fivrfjent alternation of north-west conditions and severe frost, were not so apparent in August. The only cold snap of note occurred between the fifth and seventh when a heavy snowfall coated .the high country almost down to the lower levels. (Several frosts were recorded but though sharp Were not severe Throughout the greater part of the province the rainfall was above the average, especially so in South Canterbury. There was almost an entire absence of strong winds, which were more or less a marked feature of the preceding month. OUTLOOK FOil SEPTEMBER. The heavy snowstorm experienced the first day of the month as far as the city and Banks Peninsula was concerned proved to be the severest on record for September. Seventeen degrees of. frost succeeded the storm in the city, also a record for the month, and the most severe experienced for at least fourteen years in Christchurch. It is a remarkable fact that notwithstanding the frequent intervals of mild weather experienced during the winter, snow has fallen on the plains in May, Juno, July, and now September. September should prove n very changeable month, warm north-west conditions alternating with further very cold southerly storms being a prevailing feature.
