The Riecarton trainer. 11. AY. Bang, is seriously indisposed at present, his illness being of a nature which will, keep him in bed for some time. Sir George Clifford has a usefuliooking team of three-year-olds to carry his colours this season, headed by_ Miss Mimic, Acquittal. Royal Stag, Nightraider and Macduff- Unfortunately, the last-named trio have been giving some trouble lately, owing to nnsoundness. The ailments have come at a very inopportune time, in view of the near approach of the spring meetings. They are all in work again, however, and it- is hoped that there will he no further breaks in their preparation. Jeannofe is having an easy time at present, and ho may be operated, ou for wind troubles before he is given any more track workP. McGrath has token in hand a four-year-old raare by All Red—Lady Victoria, by Pilgrim’s Progress—Lady Lillian. ’The newcomer is a sister to Red Knight and a half-sister to Royal Star. Wrestler has rejoined -I. B. Pearson’s active team, but so far his tasks have been of an easy nature. A four-year-old brother to Tunic, by Bonny Glen—Jacket, has been taken in hand by T. H. Gillett. and will be got ready to race later in the season. Marc Anthony’s two-year-old halfbrother, by Kilbroney—Vblodia, is on the easy list at present. After being broken In he was given a, bit of work, but he was gelded recently. He is making a good recovery from the operation, but he will be given a decent spell before T. H. Gillett puts him into commission. Onslaught has rejoined; Outts Bros.’ team, after being on the retired list for a few months- He showed decided signs of lameness in the autumn, but he appears to be quite sound again, and if he goes on the right way ho should be a very useful stake-earner for the Chokebore Lodge stable this season. Mr R. H. Skipwith. who recently returned from the front, has been reappointed to his old position as starter to the Wanganui Jockey Club. Mr RB. Lusk wiU occupv the judge’s box. A partnership in Spanner has-been, registered a-s between Messrs AV. G. Stead and AV- Richmond. Biplane recently received a little stable support for the AustralianJockey Club’s Epsom Handicap, and with the withdrawal of Spanner now rales favourite for that event. Not- a single Auckland owner is represented in the New Zealand Cup. and only one EUerslie trained horse, in \Aindorab. who is owned by Mr G. Currie, of Wanganui, is in the list. Arrangements are well in hand ror the special trotting meeting, to be held at. Addington on Saturday. September H. in honour of the visit of Admiral Jcllicoe and HALS'. New Zealand. The Railway Department is being asked to put on a special brain to convoy the sailors from Lyttelton .to Addington, where they will bo entertained at lunch at noon- The first race is timed to start at 12.J0 p.m. AYith all the best, horses engaged, the meeting, in addition to interesting the Naval visitors, should attract plenty of attention from 'local trotting enthusiasts. Mr G. Craw, who has recently come into prominence as an owner and breeder of trotting stock, has keen elected president of the Alauawatu Trotting Club- “ One views will) anything but pleasure the shipping of our best hors.es to Australia for the- spring fixtures over there, and the exodus cannot but have a detrimental effect ou our own spring racing” (says the Auckland “Stax”). “We have not so many good horses in the Dominion that the departure of the champions will non have any effect, and despite, assurances bo the contrary racing where the bookmakers are in operation must have some attractions.” Hi© late Aft* A. W. Cox had first call on the services of the crack, jockey, SDonoghne, buf now T/ord Derbv and other pntron= of the Stanley Housestable have that privilege. Racing is booming in. England, the attendance of 137,763 for the three, days at Chester, in May, being a record for that fixture. The receipts aggregated £36,656. In order to mark his satisfaction at The leather's success in the Two Thousand Guineas, Sir Alec Black donated £IOOO to the Rous Memorial Fund. The. death occurred in Prance recently of the brood mare Kizil Kouro-an (Omnium ll.—Kasbah). ; who, as° » three-year-old, won the Grand Rrix and French Oaks, her earnings at that age totalling' £25,000. Among her sous was Kenilworth, who came to Australia- where he has sired many win-

Hers, including AVolaxoi and Kcunequ- ; hair, two high-class racehorses, while ; lie is known in New Zealand as the | sire of Housewife, Marianne and Lord j Kenilworth. j At a race meeting at Lewes, Eng- . land, recently the fog was so thick j that the runners could not be dis- i cerned by those in the chief betting j ring until they were within a few j yards of the winning pest. In one race wagers were recorded up to the rime the winner was passing the .judge'?, box. and the starting hell had not finished ringingThe annual report of the Auckland Trotting Chib states thal during the season the chib gave away in stakes j the stun of £11.250, which was an addition of £ISOO on the amount given fast year, when there teas one day's less i racing. The record purses were at-; tempted On two occasions during the \ year, and regret is expressed that in ! no case was the attempt successful. The j Great Northern .Derby, the third of j these classic raws under the club’s i auspices, was held during the Christ- i mas meeting, and attracted a record : field of seven first-class three-year-olds,, and provided a most interesting con- , test. ITic advisahilitv of holding these races is fully established,, and the committee hopes to see the stake still further advanced in the near future. The accompanying balance-sheet, and profit and. loss account shows that the Government received from this club no less a- sum than £0352 3s od in taxation, and the local body £lB7 Is ild for rates and water, making a total of £9530 Ss Id paid in taxation during the year. 'lTie sum of £3OOO has been carried, to capital account, the amount standing to credit of that account nOw being £20.500. In view of the heavy charges for repairs, alterations and maintenance, the committee has not written anything off buddings, this year. Only two small amounts have been written oft, £IOO 17? fid office furniture, and £IOO course fittings, a total of £2OO 17s Od. Deference is made to the extensive scheme ’of alterations which it was necessary to take in hand to bring the chib's appointments up to the standard, and the opinion is expressed that the works should he vigorously undertaken. "When the alterations are complete the committee hopes to have a course so appointed and. arranged that the man who pays his shilling for entrance will be able to view the races equally well as those who patronise the more expensive enclosure.
