■SHIPPING NOTES The Rothesay, from Auckland, arrived at •Wellington.'last evening. The Kauri, from Lyttelton, arrived at Newcastle, where she was' to load coal for Dunedin, yesterday. The JEssex left Newcastle laden with coal for the Railway Department yesterday. The Shropshire, is to leave Wellington on Thursday morning at daybreak, for Liverpool, via Panama. The Corinna is due at Wellington to-day from New Plymouth, and is to sail for Dunedin this evening.' The Matatua should leave Wellington tomorrow evening for Lyttelton and Dunedin. Mr. Arthur Jeffrey, a Sunderland theatre manager, end formerly a shipyard worker, has patented an invention for the improved plating of ships (reports ah exchange). Instead of the usual flat plate, his device is provided with longitudinal curves, and in use two plates are placed back to back, so that the corrugations form longitudinal tubes or chambers. The result is a hull of enormous strength, owing to the tubular construction. The chambers can be, filled with water for ballast or with cork or other suitable material for buoyancy. The S.S. and A. Line advises that the Blue Btar liner, Gamana, en route from' London, is expected to reach Napier to-morrow at noon. She is to load meat for London at the Hawke’s Bay port. The Kowhai is expected to be relaunched off the Wellington patent slip to-morrow. Captain Davies, of the Katoa, is proceeding to Australia for orders. Mr J. Sligo has succeeded Mr J. Murchio os purser of the Corinna. Repairs to the Pateena, which was damaged through striking the Onehunga wharf, ore likely to take about a fortnight, and the Auckland office of the Union, Steam Ship Company states that these will be carried out'at Onehunga. Nearly 1000 trawlers and drifters have been demobilised in Britain. -Many demobilised officers of the naval and military service have expressed their readiness to take up the fishing in-dustry-as a living under the training and supervision, of the Government scheme, which provides for fmanci-J assistance and instruction. The Msharoa, could not be worked at Wellington yesterday-on account of a shortage of laboilr. The Wakatu was to have left for Kaikoura last, evening, but owing to advice having been received yesterday morning that there was. a , heavy sCa. at that port caused by strong easterly wind, she did not sail as expected.” • " The Wootton’not being able to occupy the clip, it being" engaged by the Cygnet, loaded general cargo yesterday and sailed for Wellington last evening. The oil steamer Euplecleta is now expected to sail lor Dunedin on Wednesday or Thuisday. The Mokoia, after discharging about 200 tons of cargo here yesterday, sailed in the afternoon for Wellington, Napier, Gisborne and Auckland. The Koromiko left Auckland at 2 p.m. on Saturday, with a large quantity of cargo for discharge here. She is due this evening, and upon finishing her discharging will take in » full cargo for Auckland. . APPOINTMENT FOR CAPTAIN STRINGER, Captain J.. ,R. Stringer, formerly of the Union Company’s service, has been appointed assistant harbourmaster .ate Sydney. Captain Stringer joined the Union Company as third officer on January 6, 1689. Ho served as third, second and chief officers on various Steamers,, and was. appointed master in the tetvioe on: July 4. 1908, when he took command of the Kocmya. .
