Opie, on behalf of the Visiting^Oomrflifcfcee. .reported to the South Waimakariri River Board yest-ei--day that at Mason’s Flat.the river needed careful watching, as position was far from satisfactory. The whole board should inspect that part of the river as soon as possible and! decide what should bo done. The position at .Stewart’s Gully was even more serious. Ihs Railway Department had been asked to bear part of the , cost, of protective works, but had replied that there was no danger to the railwav embankment It was decided on Mr Opie’s motion that the hoard should visit the "two sites on Monday next, and to defer consideration of suggestions by the engineer until the inspection was made;. / ; ; "
The monthly meeting -of the .South Waimakariri R-iref Board-Was held yesterday; present—Messrs ! J, tf&slia (chairman), H. E. Peryman, F. B. Jones, A. S. Bruce, W -P. Spencer C* H -Opi®; J. p . w. Leej df: Bowden and J. B. laurenson. . The! : oVerseer reported that since t-lio’ previous rneeting there had beeh three floods in the fiver. The onlv damage was that a. few of the boulder crates at the end of No. 9 embankment were sunk; repairs had been effected at small cost; He reported difficulty in obtaining supplies of young trees for planting on.the board’s reserves. Silyef poplar’v?tffees and marram grass had been planted oh the sand dunes between No. 10 embankment and Henderson’s Road. The secretary reported regarding the conditions under which the old. Selwyn County Council agreed to charge the board only onethird! water rates in respect- of water from races obtained from headworks oh one of the board’s reserves; After considerable dismission, it was decided ta have a conference! with representative? of the county council on the matter.
