OBITUARY.

COLONEL STUART NEWALL, C.B. The death of Colonel Stuart Newall, which took place at the District ?• ? aik b on Sunday, breaks a notable Jink m the chain of old colonists, particularly in the police and military sections. Colonel Newall was &lJ Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in y a-io and commenced his colonial career twenty years later, in Victoria. Ho soon came on to New Zealand, however, and engaged in goldmining in Otago. Subsequently he joined the Militia for tuo W aikato War, and served five years. Then he became a member of tlie Armed Constabulary and served in Jitokow&ni’s war, passing through Ohute s track to Waitara, thence to Auckland. In laoj Colonel Newall received his first commission as sub-inspector, and with ™ nk he tvas sent to the Thames m 1870, and was present at the opening of the goldfield. During his residence there he did much usenil service, apart from his ordinary duties, in exploring the bush and cutting tracks to various places. From 1876 to 1879 he supervised the construction of the main road from Cambridge towards xapw. He was present at Parihaka when Te Kooti was arrested on November 5 1881. In January, 1883. Colonel Newall was transferred to the permanent staff of the New Zealand Militia, and became district adjutant of the Canterbury Volunteers. During 1891 he was transferred to the command of the Wanganui and Taranaki District, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Shortly afterwards he was placed In charge of the Wellington District. Colonel Newall was in command of the 6th South African Contingent, was mentioned in dispatches, and received the Queen's Medal and four clasps. He was made a C.B. in 1900, and retired from service in 1902, entering civil life for a period as secretary and manager of the Commercial Travellers’ Club, Wellington. In 1872 Colonel Newall married Miss Roberts, sister of Xaeu-tenant-Colbnel Roberts, N-Z.Ol, one time Stipendiary Magistrate at Tauranga, and there were four daughters and one son by the marriage.

ROBERT FAIRBAIRNTho lato Mr Robert Pairbairn, who passed away at his residence, Kirwee, last week ; was in his sixty-seventh year, having been bom on August 12, 1851, at Mellerstam, Scotland. He accompanied his parents to Tasmania when he waa two years of age. Whilst still in his youth he came to New Zealand, but returned in 1879 to Tasmania, where he was married. Shortly afterwards ho again took passage for New Zealand, and settled in Kirwee, where he resided till the time 'of his death—a period of about forty years. Ho was in the butchering trade with his brother, in the early days at Kirwee, but relinquished this and worked for a number of years for the Courtenay Read Board. He also followed the occupations of shearing and threshing- The late Mr Fairbairn served on the Kirwee School Committee for a number of years, and was a member of the Domain Board at the time of his death. He waft also a member of the A.O.F. Gourt Pride of Courtenay. Sixteen of his brother Foresters attended the funeral, and Brother G. T. Robertson, 0-R/., read the Foresters’ service at the grave. The burial service was conducted by the Rev P. Revell. Four nephews of the deceased acted as pall-bearers. He leaves a widow, a grown-up family of two sons and four daughters, and eleven grandchildren.
