FROZEN MEAT.
At the meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday, the chairman (Mr W. G. Gallagher) referred to the large quantity of frozen meat in the cool stores of the Dominion. He said he had seen a statement, made up to seven weeks ago, showing that there were 8,000,000 carcases, averaging 601h per carcase, in the c’ool stores. He moved that Mr W- Nosworthy, M.P., and Mr W. J. Dickie, M.P., be asked to urge the Government to press for the clearance of the stores-
Mr W. T. Lill considered the position was very gloomy, and he was afraid that there was something very serious in front of New Zealand. Mr J. Williams remarked that he was confident that New Zealand could do nothing. The American Trust had the control of the English market and were keeping New Zealand meat out. Mr C. Ileid said he considered that New Zealand had " gone to the dogs,” and it was absolutely useless trying to do anything with the present Government, and he was certain that the Government had no control of anything. Mr G. W. Leadley contended that, with the present limited supply ol ships, the next season’s killing in New Zealand would start with 500,000 carcases in the- stores of the Dominion.
