Mrs S. Oouper, late of Bexley Road, has received advice that her husband, Private S. Oouper, is returning by the Somerset, due on August 12. Amongst those returning bv the Matatua is Major R. Stout, N.Z.M-C., a son of the Chief Justice, Sir Eobert Stout. Dr G. M. Lester, who has been confined to his room for some time, is now reported to be on the high road to recovery. Mr W. Jitriss, draughtsman in the City Surveyor's office, has been appointed deputy-inspector of Fire Brigades. Mr W. R. Webb, 10, Princess Street, W Colston has been advised that his son, W. W. Webb, is returning by the Somerset, duo about August 12. Mrs J. Caldwell, 504, Barbadoes Street- St Albans, has received word that her son, Sapper Edgar H. Caldwell, is returning home bv the Port Hacking. Mrs T. A. Grose, of Pine Knot, Pago's Road, has received advice that her fourth sou, Gunner R. S. B. Grose who left with the Thirty-sixth Reinforcements, iB returning by the Port Hacking. Driver Joseph O'Donnell, who went away with the first section of the Australian Field Artillery, has arrived back in Ohristchurch- Ho served with his unit throughout the war. and his many friends were glad to see him looking bo fit and well on his return. : Driver O'Donnell is a, son of Mr D. of Christchurch. \

_On Saturday evening, at' Oxford, Messrs R, H. Parish, B. T. Cooper, .J. Cook, P. Fisher and P, H* Thompson, Justices of the Peace, and Mr R. E. Henderson, waited' on Constable M- Leahv and presented him with a well-filled purge of sovereigns from the people of Oxford in token of th© esteem in which he is held, and their sympathy with him in his long illness, which has caused his retirement after being twenty-four vears in the district.

Captain S- Saxby, who brought the new dredge Kaioue to Wellington from Portsmouth, comes from the Shetland Islands,'the home of many sailors. This is his first visit to the "Dominion, although he has been at sea for a considerable number of years. Captain Saxby is a cousin of Lieutenant-Colonel Saxby, who was in command of the Maori Contingent from New Zealandand another cousin was the late Lieuten-ant-Colonel Conrad.
