COURSING.
Although coursing was popular with the ancient world, it is still less than a century since the first championship meeting was held in Great Britain—at Glasgow in 1835. For coursing died out during the Middle Ages, and it was not until seventy years after 1776, when a club was founded at Swnffham by Lord Orford, that it attained its present popularity. During those years, however, its progress was swift, and by 1876 the annual prizes competed for had reached a value of £40,000.
