Mi - Hughes was the centre of a nniqu; ceremony at Gray’s Inn and the LawCourts, when, for the first time oi. record, a man was passed through the various grades and admitted to the Bai within an hour. At Gray’s Inn Mi Hughes donned the garb of a studen; ' for two minutes, then a barrister’s robe | for five minutes, finally sporting the i silk. j The Lord Chancellor, with the ’ Benchers, received Mr Hughes in the j Pension .Room. The Chancellor said j that according to special orders from j the Bench, he called Mr Hughes to the i Bar. I Lord Birkenhead added that it was ! the King's desire to make Mr Hughes ; a King’s Counsel, but there were diffi- ! culties. Though Air Hughes was an Honorary Bencher of Gray’s Inn, he , had not been admitted to the English ; Bar. However, by goodwill and i ingenuity, the way out had been found. Air Hughes was now a barrister, and i speaking for the other Benchers he ' (Lord Birkenhead) expressed gratitude i for the signal services Air Hughes had ;■ rendered to the Allies’ cause and the pride with which he welcomed him as a member of the Bar. ; Air Hugh es then proceeded to tin Law Courts, where Lord Reading.
