ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

- - *■ NOTES BY ** SPECTATOR.” ( The fourtly series of matches in the Canterbury I'ooihall Association's competitions were decided on Saturday in fine weather. St- Albans put up n,"surprisingly good fight against Lin wood, souring four goals fo their opponents’ six, Gangers hod rather a luokv win against Y.M.C.A. at .Richmond i'Park, and at English Park Nomads had no difficulty in accounting for United. NOMADS v. UNITED, So far this season United have, been very disappointing, -and their display on Saturday against Nomads was wretched. Certainly Harker in "on.i played up to form, and bad'no chance with tho shots that heat him, aril .Graham worked very hard, a (.back, but apart from those two very little can bo said of tho other players. Nomads were out in force, but with such a weak opposition they took matters easy and tbo football suffered in consequence. Occasionally the forward line- showed glimpses of combination, and ! ,A ricklnt-on and Grant showed good understanding. Ahtchcll was very safe at, back, and Bpencor was responsible for tricky footwork. BANGERS r. Y.A1.0.A. This game, although fought out at a fast paco was devoid of good football, and much wild kicking was indulged m by both sides. Bangers wore well served by their hacks, Lee and Lusk Newell was very cfleclive at centre half, hut Beauvais was below form. The forwards relied ton much on individualism with the result that they wero often beaten by the opposing backs and were seldom dangerous near goal. Powell scored tho winning goal in tho first half with a neat effort bub thereafter .ho was inclined to loaf and put' very little vim into his ploy. The Y.A1.0.A. have got together a very serviceable team, pud they will probably do much better in the next round. f l here are no “stars’’ amongst them, but their play is vigorous and of a. nature likely l'o upset tho calculations of more finished exponents of tho game. Kellv and Bowden are a, can pie of dashing forwards, and when they learn to control tho ball hotter more goals will come their way. _ Stan Afarshall, who was associated with Nomads a. few seasons asm, partnered Hilgrove at hack and played well up to tho time he was hurt. LIN WO (ID V. ST ALBANS. Linwood beat St Albans in a match in' which no less than ten goals wero scored, but tho Saints “died game, - ’ and penetrated the Linwood defence on four oecasons, a, feat, which so far has not been accomplished by any other chib in tho competition. Dobbs again did well for St Albans, and made some clever clearances, STRAY SHOTS, Tin Canterbury Football Association has decided to take -an active part in tho Peace Celebrations, and a strong committee lias been set up to go into details. During Peace week it, is ’niended to play a, match at English Park between the returned soldiers and a picked eleven from the Senior clubs, and an endeavour is to he made to get Lieutenant Fricklcton,, V.0., to captain the soldiers’ team. Tho Senior competition will he suspended next Saturday to allow of a trial match .being played between tho Probables and Possibles in view of the forthcoming Brown Bhield match with Auckland on June 28. Contrary to the procedure last season tho O.P.A. has appointed five members of the executive, as selectors of the Canterbury team, and Messrs English, Connor, Al’Kmley, Norman and Beauvais will make tho selection. The selection of a tmlv representative eleven will be a difficult task this season, with so many players to choose from, and it i s hardly likely that tho five selectors will be unanimous on the appointment of plovers lor certain _ positions. Such a la/ge committee is too cumbersome to achieve the best results, and it would havo been far wiser to have appointed three selectors as was the case last season, or even one aS rm °^ cn °tber sports. Tim allocation, of grounds for Senior matches still requires the attention of the Management Committee. For several reasons the ground' at AVoolston tank is unsuitable for a Senior match It is too cramped and the concrete encket, pitch running across the centre Is decidedly dangerous. Tho ina-xlung out of the grounds is also a, matter th it requires' immediate attention. T!n> Bangers-Y.AUC.A. match at English lark was interrupted on two or three occasions through no definite area bei-i-r marked out, and the referee find orcat difficulty in arriving at a decision. ''
