Notice appears in the “ Gazette that Colonel H. S. E. Hobday haa been granted a License to erect and maintain a jetty in the Heathcote Estuary near the foot of the Mount Pleasant road. Air Douglas Sey niour. in explaining the present position, said that the men were using departmental tools and-material, and they were put to the occupation most likely to expedite their recovery. Therefore, one man might bo working in tho kitchen garden and another making articles for sale. If one man could sell his product the other might cxjiect to be paid. The rule that the articles should not be sold might bo varied to allow' a man to send home one article in four. A delegate stilted that at Rotorua the receipts were pooled for the entertainment fund Mr V B M’Callum said that in Christchurch the Department was taking the money.
