SOLDIERS AND., TYPISTSAN INTERESTING POINT. llio attitude of returned soldiers to- " ai 'd3 women workers was disclosed in an interesting discussion at the 11.5.A. Conference to-day. Oa tho financial report Mr Miller (laieri) suggested that the typist”'s position in headquarters office should U Idled by a returned soldier. Mr J. D. Harper said that he approved of the principle, but the comniittee had tried to get suitable returned soldiers for the work and had failed. “'Does the same remark apply to tin cnarwomauP” asked tho president cl Mr Miller, ■ “That is_ a very pertinent remark,” said Mr A. E. Leadley. “Typing is essentially a girl’s job. unless you take the case of a man, for instance', who has lost two legs- We have a typist m the Christchurch office, and an ablebodied man should not bo expected lc sit down all day and tinkle at a typewriter. Wo should get a better job for him.” Mr Harper said that if a job was a woman’s job it should be filled by a woman. Aomen had justified themselves in tho war, and”‘had established a right to recognition. . They should not have men in a. woman’s job. Mr Pollock said that Auckland had employed two girl typists, hut on she election of a new executive an advertisement was issued for disabled men to take the jobs, and at present there , was one man employed who had lost ' an arm and one who*had lost a leg. A i shorthand-typist had also been adver- 1 tised for. 1 Mr Miller accepted Mr Harper’s ex-' phmatiou as satisfactory. =====—- I
