WHY THE SEA IS SALT.
_ln the Golden Age, runs the old Norse legend, the earth was ruled by a god named ‘'Prodi,” who, among other trifles, possessed a hand-mill that ground out gold and happiness and peace, and auy_ other good thing required. The grinders were two giantesses ruled over by Prodi, and all went well until <t sea-rover appeared on the scene. After this, however, all went badly, for the rover slew Prodi, and carried the hand-mill and the giantesses out to sea, where he ordered them to grind salt. This for a whole day they did, but when night came they awoke their new master from his sleep and asked if they had not ground enough. But the sea-rover sternly bade them keep grinding till morning. The maidens took him at his word, and* worked with such a will that long before daylight the great load of salt they had made sank the ship. And that, says the old Norse legend, is why thq sea is salt.
