RICCARTON WHISPERS.

NOTES AND NEWS. [From Our Corresfokdkkt,] HOUSE NUMBERING. I understand it is tlio intention of the local council to amend its by-lairs in relation to tho position of liouso numbers. This action has been deemed necessary owing to the difficulty experienced during the recent epidemic by doctors, telegraph messengers and others ;h locating promptly the numbers of tho places they were in search of. It has been suggested that tho gate post, or nearest verandah post to the street, would be tho most place. POULTRY FARMS. Poultry farming is one of the occupations being followed by returned soldiers, and as there is plenty of • suitable ground roun Sockburn district it would bo a good propostion on -the part of the Government to purchase land in that locality for this purpose. AYONHEAD SETTLEMENT. Returned soldiers are continually inquiring when the Avon Head Settlement .will be thrown open for selection. This class of settlement is eagerly sought after, and a season will be lost unless immediate possession is given. It .is hoped the Department will hurry this urgent matter along, YALDHUEST LIGHT. The long-promised light on tho Yald-hurst-Wakefield Roads is now an accomplished fact. The authorities would do well by asking the owners of the adjacent properties to .trim the trees, as they interfere with the lighting.-. WELCOME HOME. 1 One of the most successful social and dances tendered to returned soldiers was held in tho Town Hall, Clarence Road, on Thursday evening, the returned soldiers being Messrs A. Cross, 0. Palmer, W. Scobio, P. Miller, A. and E. Fine, H. and A. Palmer. Mr R- Hanna welcomed the boys borne, and Private A. press replied for them. Songs and recitations were given by Mesdamcs Croft and Miller, and Miss Cross, and Messrs A. Cross and C; Larsen. Mr A. Arnersen supplied the music and Mr T. B. Stokes acted as M.O. - UPPER RICOARTON MEMORIAL LIBRARY. .. . A . number of ladies residing in the district met the Library Committee, on Wednesday night to arrange matters in connection with the coming bazaar. The chairman informed the meeting that £2OO was required 1 to finish paying for the building. The Indies took up the project with enthusiasm. Stalls were allotted, and it -fras decided ito’ hold the bazaar two days in National week. TRAMWAY SERVICE. Numerous ■ complaints are heard amongst users of the trams in connection with the overcrowding which occurs, and it is generally thought that if the service to Clyde Road were extended to Church Corner this would relieve the congestion which takes place at present. Complaints are also frequently heard of the action of laclies monopolising the two rear .seats set apart for smokers. Items of interest for this column left at Mr Dickenson’s store will bo attended to.
