SHEEP DOG TRIALS.

ON THE CASHMERE HILLS. The twentieth annual competitions of the Christchurch Sheep Dog Trials Club were commenced, this morning on the Cashmere Hills, with idea! weather conditions. The following gentlemen officiated in their reapoctivo capacities:—President, Mr T. D. Boag; honorary judge, Mir G. Leslie Rutherford; honorary secretary, Mr E. Hardcastle; timekeepers, Messrs G. Murray-Aynsley and R. Mi. D. Morton; flag stewards. Messrs J. Evans and D. M’Langhlin. The half-bred sheep used were lent by Mr R. D. Morten, as merino wethers could not be procured on account of thoir scarcity, Messrs F. and G. M'Laughlin attended to the letting out of the sheep. Them wag a good entry in Class 1, thirty dogs figuring on the card. Details of the event are as follows;—A. Fraser’s Girn was rather uncertain in going out, and was too wide in coming on the sheep. The dog made a had run, and the sheep broke out. Though ho recovered them, he failed to pen them at the call of time. The sheep were stubborn at the touch above tho flat, and, as the dog could not move them, ho was called off. J. Morgan’s Moss headed his sheep in tain SOseo ' Ho tnus too wide in bringing back, and the sheep raced to the flat, where tho dog failed to regain control. P. Ballantyno’s Spring headed in Stain Ifisco. There was 100 much barking and action, and bringing back as too slow—lOmin 58soc was hia time to ring them. He failed to pen at the call of time. It. Fraser's Adamus as wide in going out, an dbeadsd somewhat raggodly in 2miu Msec. Ho was rather steady coming back, but nearing the flat the sheep got away from him. Recovering, he worked wide, and was making several efforts to steady them in, the ring when the call c / time stopped him in lOmin 7i500.. A Stewart’s Bot, going out very wide, headed in tain 35500. Ho brought his sheep back steadily until the flat was reached, where they broke, two of them running into the luncheon tent. That ended the run. W. O. Gerrold’a Lockinvar headed in 2min Hsec, but crossed in heading. Tho dog worked very kesnfy, but it was some time before ho cot his sheep to the ring. Although inclined"’to run wide at the turns, the dog kept a good line, and in 10mm lesec hact steadied his sheep in tho ring, holding them well. Tho dog, though working well, at tho yard, failed to secure hia sheep when time was called. Hard lines were the portion of Air H. T. Little’s Jack, who went out in an excellent lino and headed his sheep in Imin 39scc. Coming down tho hill, hie sheep got into a very bad position among tho rocks, where it was quite impossible for the dog to work them. ,His run accordingly terminated. Mr H. T. Little’s Sept went out with a fair lino and headed his sheep in tain 12 sec. He brought them steadily down the hill, but worked widely at the yards and failed _to secure them in time. Ho had them in the ring in Bmin 45see, Mr C. C. Gray’s Boss Jnnr. a former winner, went out on a good line, but crossed when heading. Coming down tho hill another dog joined in the run. The sheep were returned to the pen and Mr Gray’s dog called in for another run later in the day. T. 11. Bennett’s Gale went out well and headed in tain 47sec, bringing his sheep down tho hill well and fast, but, working somewhat wide at the yard, failed to secure when time was celled, W. T. Pollock's Mobs rounded his sheep very quickly m Imin 50scc. The same rocks which had baffled a previous competitor proved disastrous to him, ana ho was called in. Mr J. L. O’Connor’s Kauroo Don went out well, headed in ‘tain 59sec and had his sheep steady in the ting in Bmin 33seo. In spite of keen, though rather wide, working at. the yard time prevented him securing his sheep. Mr R. VT. Trotter’s Captain Pace headed ni a. good Tine in Imin 44sec. He brought his sheep down tho hill speedily, but lost time through wide work at the 'bottom, which he subsequently recovered by tho time be bad them hold. Ring lime (tain 16.-ce. He failed to yard tho sheep, although his work there wa? dacldedlv good. Mr W. Carney's Tyke made a' good line, heading in Imin iiOscc. He brought bis sheen down the hill steadily, and had them held in Bmin. His work at the yards was not close enough to bo effective, and the "nil of time bent him.
