The Westland County Council, in a letter which was read last night thank-' ing tlie City Council for its hospitality at the recent Otira tunnel, ceremony, referred to the Minister’s forecast that the tunnel might be comnletedHn two years, and urged that public "opinion should ho so maintained as to secure the realisation of the promise for the summer traffic of 1920. The sentiment was warmly echoed around the council table. _‘Following a visit by Mr Fnrkert, Government inspector, the Wairoa Harbour Board unanimously decided that a Bill should be immediately promoted to construct a harbour at Waikokopu and a railway for the combined districts. This means the abandonment of work at Wairoa harbour that has cost nearly £IOO,OOO. A public meeting will be . held to discuss tho position. Owing to frequent changes in tho city meter-reading department, consequent on men being called up for military service, arrangements are being made to road tho meters in the; residential portiou of the city once every two months instead of monthly as at present. This will save the necessity of replacing a man who goes into camp shortly, and will also reduce the ledger-keepers’ work considerably. • -

Reporting last night on the cost of road-making, the Citv Works Committee stated that Ferry Road on both sides of the tram line from Fitzgerald AveA nue to Wilson’s Road had been laid down with tarred macadam on a wellrolled bottom to an average depth of 3iin. This work was carried out at a cost of 2s id per superficial yard. The report was received without discussion.
