Tho Hon 6. W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, left Christchurch for Wellington Inst night. Private J. Forrester was farewelled last week by his fellow-workers at A. Peppler’s, and was the recipient of expressions of goodwill. A resolution of sympathy was earned at the meeting of tho Now Brighton Borough Council last evening to Mr 0. H. Opie (a past Mayor of New Brighton) in connection with the death of Ids son.

Mr E. E. Stark, electrical engineer to the Christchurch City Council, is visiting Wellington and Auckland. He will give a lecture in the latter city on hydro-electrical developments in New Zealand and California.

1 On Saturday morning a presentation was made to Mr G. B. Steel, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr John Steel, ory behalf of the employees of tho firm of . Steel . Bros., handed a salad bowl to Mr Steel, and voiced the sentiments of the donors.

A motion of sympathy with Councillor Ada Wells was carried by the City Council last night on the death of her husband, A motion hf sympathy was also accorded to the family of tho late Mr George Treleaven, who was a city councillor many years ago. Mr H. A. Archdall, representative of tho National Mortgage and Agency Company at Rangiora, and Mr W. B. Cockcroft, of tho New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association, left on Sunday on a fortnight’s holiday motor trip to tho West Coast, via Blenheim and Nelson,

At the meeting of the -New Brighton Borough Council last evening Coundillov F. H. Christian referred to the accident which befell Dr W. E. Stevens, and moved that the council should express its sympathy with him. Other councillors spoke on similar lines, and expressed the hope that Dr Stevens would soon recover. The motion was carried unanimously.

There was a very large attend mice at the courts of the Addington Tennis Club on Saturday, when Bombardier P. Cooper was the guest of the members at a tennis afternoon. A presentation was made to Bombardier Cooper, Messrs J. Munnings and 0. P. Agar referring to his great services to tho club, of which he had been a member since its formation, having held office as secretary during the past seven years.

At the Riccarton Town Hall last night a social was held under the auspices of tho local Send-off and Wel-come-home Committee. There was a large attendance of residents, and a very pleasant evening _ was spent in dancing, interspersed with musical and elocutionary items. The departing soldiers were Lance-Corporal S. SyraTstep, Privates L. Moore, ,1. Olsen and H. Fenton, and Gunner Fitzer, of tho Royal Australian Garrison Artillery, an old Riccarton boy, who is over from Australia on special leave to say goodbye to friends and relatives. During the evening Mr G. Witty, M.P., made a presentation to each of the soldiers on behalf of the Riccarton residents, and wished them God-speed and a safe and speedy return. He also extended a welcome home to a large number of returned men. Dancing was kept up until the early hours!
