PERSONAL.

Amongst the names of Dominion soldiers recently mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig’s dispatches is that of Sergeant Arthur Hunter, Second Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade. Sergeant Hunter, who is a son of Mrs Hunter, son., of Church Bay, Lyttelton, left with tho advance party of the brigade.

The employees of Messrs Triggs and Denton, Ltd. and their friends met in Rollestion Street Hall, Linwood, to bid farewell to Gunner A. H. Peters. There was a large attendance. During an interval Mr W. H. Denton presented a wristlet watch to the soldier on behalf of his fellow employees, and wished him good luck and a safe return. The evening was spent in dancing and games, Mrs Baxter supplying the music. Musical items were contributed by Misses Watkin and Frisk, and Messrs Harrison and Du Kay.

The flag at tho Rangiora, Fire Station was at half-mast yesterday out. of respect for Mr A. J. Sillier, whose death occurred tho previous evening, after a brief illness. He had been a member of tho brigade for thirty years and was much esteemed by his comrades. Shortly after receiving his twenty-five years’ service decoration from the United Firo Brigades’ Association, ho retired from active duty, and was elected a life honorary member of the brigade. Ho was a keen and successful angler, most of his spare time in tho fishing season being spent whipping the trout streams in the vicinity of Rangiora. As a townsman he 'played a cpiiet and unassuming part.

There was a very large attendance at the courts of the Addington Tennis Club on Saturday, when Bombardier P. hooper, who is on final leave from camp, was the guest of the members at a tennis afternoon. A presentation was made to.Bombardier Cooper, Messrs J. Mannings and 0. P. Agar referring to his great services to the club, c? which lie had been a member since its formation, having held office a s secretary during the past seven years.
