The members of the Christ's College first fifteen left for the north last night to take part in the annual inter-collegi-ate tournament, which is to commence at Wanganui on Monday. The tournament will he continued on Wednesday and Friday. The concrete pillars which were toppled into the Kawarau Fiver some months ago were mentioned in the Supreme Court at Dunedin on Thursday. Mr Williams, civil engineer, said that one pillar, weighing 700 tons, was actually lifted with the force of ten sticks of gelignite. Mr John Downey, ex-shperintendent of the Sea View Mental Hospital, Hokitika, died suddenly in Wellington a few days ago. About eighteen months ago the late Mr Downey retired from the public service and settled in Wellington. During the forty years ho lived in Hokitika lie was a very prominent member of the Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by a widow and two sons, .one of whom left New Zealand with the Main Body. No valid or sound argument has been adduced as to why the electors oi N.Z. should not voice their opinions on the National Efficiency Board’s proposals for National Prohibition. Here is a Board set up by the Government to examine the conditions and report as to ways and means of promoting National Efficiency. Absolutely impartial, this body considered calmly the advantages or otherwise to the community of the liquor traffic. It heard evidence from all sections. “ The Trade" placed its facts before the Board—so did the prohibition advocates, while the non-party members of the community—farmers, business folk and workers—gave evidence. The Board reported that immediate National Prohibition was essential. Surely the electors of N.Z- should have an opportunity of recording their votes on the Board’s proposal.
