SERENT TRAVIS.

A BRAVE SOLDIER’S END. WELLINGTON, August 10. A special from the official war correspondent at the Now Zealand headquarters, dated August 8, says: To-day Sergeant Richard ‘ Charles Iravis and .an officer who was with him were-killed by a stray shell. In Sergeant Travis the New Zealand force loses one of its bravest soldiers, who made a speciality of raiding, and had earned more than local fame for his many successful exploits. Ho is the man referred to specially as the Otago horse-breaker in my letter of June 11. His methods in raiding were peculiarly ms own. He was' somewhat of a character. A man of great resource and considerable initiative, he studied thoroughly beforehand his various enterprises, thus eliminating as far as possible the ordinary risks of war by careful!}' marking down those of the enemy destined for destruction or capture, or both, much as a big-game hunter stalks his prey, and notes and places to his own. advantage tho .configuration of country and cover available. Whether raiding night or in broad daylight, Sergeant Travis was invariably successful, and he was well hacked by other daring Otago' men, who 'accompanied him. It is the irony of/ fate that after his many dangerous exploits in battle, and his raiding in No Man’s Lands, he should ■ fall a victim to a chaned shell. Ho had been awarded the D.G.M., the Bel gian Croix do Guerre, the Military Medal, and a bar to the latter. w
