TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The Board of Governors of the Christchurch Technical College met last evening, Mr G. Scott presiding over an attendance of about twenty members. Tho chairman in his report made reference to the Education Bill introduced in the House of Commons by Dr Fisher. The Bill provided for the establishment of compulsory continuation classes lor all persons between fourteen and eighteen years of age not receiving tuil-tiiue education. He approved of this principle, but so far as New Zealand was concerned lie considered the classes should be held between 4 p.m. and fi p.m., the employer to give up hall tho time occupied. He hoped the hoard wouW do everything possible to assist tho Efficiency Board tin its inquiry into educational matters. He noted with pleasure the. offer of the Board of Agriculture to assist the agricultural side of the college as far as possible. The report was adopted. The Appointments Committee recommended the appointment of Miss M. A. Jennings, 8.A., of the Lawrence District High School, as assistant mistress; of Air B. Stevens as assistant for the agricultural science classes; and of Mr E. Hudson as assistant for the science, shearing and agricultural classes. The committee affirmed tho general principle of compulsory daytune continuation classes. Tho report was adopted. In reply to a question later regarding the continuation classes, the chairman ruled that the board was not committed to day-time continuation classes in tlie worker’s time, hut to the compro-. niiso suggested in ids own report. Air H. Worrall strenuously opposed any system which would involve employment nf youths for moro than eight hours a day. He moved as an amendment of iho chairman’s and Appointments Committee’s reports that the board should approve the principle of daytime continuation classes wholly in the employers’ time. After a short discussion the amendment was carried. Accounts amounting to £3OO 18s 7d were authorised for payment. Tho director reported that as far ns the results of the City and Guilds of London examinations had come to hand the results were very satisfactory, every student entered having passed ju electrical engineering and in cookery, the only results yot published. The hoard congratulated the director and staff on tho highly satisfactory results attained.
