The scow Oban, which has heen refloated at Nelson after her recent accident, is the same vessel that lost all hands when being towed into Wellington during a fierce southerly gale some years ago. The King has decorated a Leith shipmaster in recognition of his courage in an encounter with a submarine cruiser. The latter’s torpedo missed, after which brisk shell fire began at two miles range. The submarine carried two Sin guns and the steamer one. The latter's smoke-boxes ignited at a critical stoge, and the submarine, believing that its shells had heen effective, made full speed on the boat. A big fight ensued, and the merchantman put out of action the submarine’s after-gun. The steamer suffered damage to a mast, but no-one was infilled; until the fight had lasted an hour, when a shell penetrated three bulkheads on the main decks, and buried itself in a spare bunker. It did not explode, hut the splints; broke the legs of a passenger. Half an hour later the submarine retired. The Oremiki will arrive from Greymouth to-day _ with the boilers of the wrecked Opotin, which will be transferred to the hulk Lilia, now being converted into a steamer.
