SIR WILLIAM ROBERTSON’S RESIGNATION.
INTERVIEW WITH THE GENERAL.
FURTHER RETIREMENTS PROBABLE.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received February 18, 10.0 a.m.) LONDON, February 17. The “Sunday Times” interview with Sir William Robertson, indicates that he was dismissed. He said:—“l have not resigned, and can onlv say that 1 will not accept either position.” The political correspondent of the “Sunday Times” understands that General Sir Herbert Plumer has declined to succeed Sir William Robertson. He adds:—“lt is anticipated that other generals will follow Sir William Robertson into retirement; in fact, the generals have revolted against the Cabinet. The gravity of their action cannot be overestimated.” The correspondent blames Lord ’ Irby’s spineless control of the War Office, and hints that Lord Derby-will ~ resign. He points out that he had an - audience with the King on Saturday. The “ Observer ” hopes that Sir William Robertson’s retirement will be temporary, and adds:—“ The resignation clears the air on the eve of battle, and removes the possible risk of friction between ourselves and our Allies." The correspondents of other newspapers emphasise, the political side of the situation, and regard the reconstruction of the Cabinet as unlikely, pointing out that the suggested alternatives tp Mr Lloyd George do not command confidence at home or abroad.
