BRIGHTON BREEZES.

events of the week. [From Our Correspondent.] COUNCIL COMMENTS. The action of the Surf Club CommitLee, in writing to the council complaining ot the lack of attention on the naro of the patrolmen is causing a good deal ot comment. It is understood that the lirsfc intimation the patrolman had that he was not giving satisfaction was on reading the account of the council meeting in Tuesday morning's newspapers. c Another effort is to be made to collect money to build a band rotunda at North Brighton. On Thursday night the band gave a concert from the temporary rotunda used at the gala. Councillors are determined to put a stop to the tree barking that is gioing on in the Rawhiti Domain. The matter is in the hands of the police. THE STRANDED WHALE. All kinds of theories were advanced as to the cause of the stranding of the bottle-nosed whale on Saturday morning. Possibly the heavy seas on the coast, coupled with the fact that the

whale had an injury to its back, which probably interfered with its propelling powcis, is the cause* Tn any case, It’s an ill wind that blows nobody « n .Y good,” because the exhibition on Saturday, Sunday and Monday will mean an addition to the funds of tfio Bed Cross Branch of over £2O. MOUNT PLEASANT. From Mount Pleasant many views interesting to Brightofiitcs may be obtained, from a height of 1637 ft. The site of the proposed salt work is, looking north 1 rom the accommodation house, clearly defined- An interesting sight each night is the switching on of tho electric lights. Curiously enough, although Brighton has tho s'nn last at night, tho electric lights are switched on before the city light. The reason for Brighton having the snn after any part of tho city is, probably, because the sunset behind the hills takes place at a point from which the, last line of sunlight strikes Brighton in a straight line, thus missing the city. SUNDAY’S FATALITY. Deep sympathy is felt for the relatives of the late Mr F. Swanston. When Mr Swanston went into the water ho left a camera on his overcoat on the beach. In the confusion of the fatality it was not recovered. Airs Swanston would he glad to know of its whereabouts. On nil sides, the work of Miss Gwen Owen, who showed so mi.cii pluck and endurance in Sunday’s sad affair, is much praised. NORTH BEACH GALA.

Although tho early part of the gala at North. Beach last Saturday was held in delightful weather, rain came on after' 4 p.m., and made matters unpleasant for spectators and officials, and spoilt the evening function. Large crowds attended, however, and the financial result will be good.

A mooting of the Gala Executive was held on Wednesday. It was decided to record in tho minutes tho invaluable services rendered by Messrs Johansen, Strahan, Leaver and Bailey. It was reported that the takings were satisfactory but that, at this stage, it was impossible to give n detailed statement. It was resolved to announce lucky number winners on Febmary 23. The winning number in Mrs Strahan’s doll competition was announced as 41, the winner being Mrs M’Gillivray. The life-saving event, which did not take place at the gala, will be held on March 23, when the competition cups donated by Sir Joseph Ward and Air B. B. Wood will he competed for. A hearty vote of thanks was carried to the ladies who worked so hard to make tho gala a success. Air Strahan’s collections totalled £B2 10s.

I'L o Per Strand and Airs Strand have returned to Now Brighton after spending a brief holiday with friends at Lower Hutt and Wellington. Ibo Rev A. 11. Sorivin, who was Alethodist minister at New Brighton during tho building of tho present church, and who left Now Zealand to do missionary work in Papua, is now spending a few weeks in tho DominionAir Scrivin will ho in Christchurch next, week, on Lis way to the Alethodist, Conference in Dunedin. - and has promised to occupy thy pulpit, of tho Brighton Church both morning and evening on Sunday, February 24, The many friends of Air Scrivin will bo delighted tn welcome again their former pastor.
