GOVERNOR-GENERALSHIP.
A LONDON RUMOUR
The " The Westminster Gazette" says:—
"Sir Arthur Steel-Mai tland's name is mentioned in connection with the Governor-Generalship of Now Zealand, and Mr W. A. S. Hewins is stated to have accepted the office of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies. The latter appointment would have intrigued us more in normal times than at this moment, hut ithas a strong interest even now. Some of the papers are quick to remind us that Mr Hewins gave the Government the worst division of its career upon the New Ministries Bill. But in the public mind Mr Hewins is principally associated with the operations of the Tariff Commission. He. was the expert henchman of Mr Joseph Chamberlain. His present association with the Colonial' Office may raise eurious conjecture, but we can wait to see whether any of the expectations which are clearly ra.'ser] in certain quarters are to be realised.
Since the above appeared Sir Arthur Steel-Maitland has been appointed to the head of the new Commercial Department, and Mr Hewins has taken his place as Under-Secretary for the Colonies.
