CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The quarterly meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held this afternoon, Mr C. H. Hewlett presiding over an attendance of eighteen members. PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS.
The president, in his address, said tbnt since the annual meeting events had moved rapidly. On e of our Allies, Russia, was in the throes of a revolution, and Italy had received a serirtus reverse, which necessitated assistance being given, to defeat the common enemy, whilst, on the other fronts, our troops continued to make steady progress. The Allies were determined, and were quite able to. succeed but it would take time and could not be done without sacrifice. It was therefore their duty as business men to face the position squarely by putting their bouse in order and preparing for a longer war than was at first anticipated. More especially was it necessary to do that now as we were approaching the ttime when 'he Second Division was about to be called up. The aim was not only to defeat our enemies on the field, but also commercially, and in order to be 'in a sound position after the war, they must conduct their affairs on correct lines. .Some of those matters bad received the attention of the council during the interval, one of the most important being sound taxation, referred to at the annual meeting by Mr Tyers. when it was resolved to recommend the Government to set up n Royal Commission on the subject.
The following new members were elected : Messrs .1. J. Dougall, G. )<.. Royds, J. R. Brown and W. S. Pratt.
